United States President Donald Trump has praised Prime Minister Andy Burnham after the United Kingdom government approved gas drilling in the Jackdaw field in the North Sea. BBC News, LBC, and The Telegraph report that Trump said Burnham is getting it done following the decision. [1][3][4][6]

Burnham announced the decision to approve the project earlier this week, according to BBC News and ITVX. The Jackdaw field is situated 150 miles east of Aberdeen and is operated by Adura, a joint venture between Shell and Equinor, BBC News reported. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the field will account for 6% of North Sea gas production once fully operational. [1][5][11][12]

Ministers stated that the first gas could be produced by the end of this month to help heat homes, alongside plans for a new energy wealth fund, BBC News reported. Environmental campaigners warned that the move hampers efforts to address climate change and offers no meaningful difference to United Kingdom energy security. [1]

Writing in The Guardian, Burnham stated that his determination to address the climate crisis is unwavering. He pledged to block new North Sea licences and maintain the goal of hitting net zero emissions by 2050. [2]
