The number of reported cloned vehicles involved in offences on United Kingdom roads has reached a record high, according to the Guardian. Official data shows that more than 11,400 drivers contacted the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency last year after receiving fines for offences they did not recognise or accept responsibility for. [1]

Vehicle cloning occurs when a number plate is fraudulently copied and placed on a similar vehicle to avoid enforcement cameras. According to the Guardian, the total number of misattribution complaints to the agency was 9 percent higher than in 2024 and almost double the level recorded in 2018. [1]

The issue comes amid broader challenges for law enforcement regarding motoring offences. As FTMQ News reported earlier, vehicle thefts in England and Wales remain significantly higher than a decade ago, with a vehicle stolen every four minutes across the United Kingdom. [4]

Motoring organisation the RAC stated that the current system needs reform to address the issue of fraudulent plates, the Guardian reported. [1]
