Environmental campaigners are urging the chancellor to reduce 24 billion pounds in planned government spending for carbon capture technologies, the Guardian reported. The campaigners want the Treasury to redirect funding toward green schemes that reliably lower energy bills and cut emissions ahead of the upcoming budget. [1]

Environmentalist Chris Packham is leading the appeal to scale back support for the projects, according to the Guardian. Packham described the 24 billion pound scheme as a national embarrassment and exorbitantly expensive. [1]

Rachel Reeves served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2024 to 2026. She has represented Leeds West and Pudsey as a Labour Party Member of Parliament since 2010. [2]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, the government has also been considering spending over 1 billion pounds to support poorer households facing rising energy costs. [4]
