Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch is preparing to deliver a speech warning that Chancellor John Healey risks inflicting more damage on the British economy than his predecessor Rachel Reeves did. The Guardian, the Daily Mail, and The Sun all reported on 20 October that the opposition leader will issue the warning ahead of the upcoming financial statement. Healey, who serves as Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Labour government, is scheduled to deliver his first budget in a week. [1][2][5][6][7]

The Daily Mail reported that Badenoch will warn Healey against causing further harm to the economy after Labour raised the national tax burden to a post-war high. City AM reported that the Conservative leader will also urge the chancellor to avoid implementing fictional cuts in his plans. [2][3]

The Guardian reported that Treasury sources indicate Healey has decided not to raise capital gains tax in his budget. The decision follows previous expectations that a capital gains tax increase would form a key part of the government revenue strategy. [1]

Badenoch has served as Leader of the Conservative Party and Leader of the Opposition since 2024. Healey became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 2026 after previously serving as Secretary of State for Defence. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the chancellor was previously considering spending over one billion pounds to help lower household energy bills. [6][7][10]
