The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York has agreed to pay more than 800 million dollars to settle sexual abuse claims made by roughly 1,300 victims, the New York Post and The New York Times reported. Lawyers representing the plaintiffs sent an email to archdiocese priests on Friday evening to announce the proposed settlement. [1][2]
The settlement plan will provide lump-sum payments to individuals who were victimized by clergy members and lay leaders in positions of authority within the Roman Catholic Church, according to the New York Post. However, the agreement is not yet final because all of the alleged victims must sign off on the deal before the archdiocese will proceed with the payouts. [1]
Archbishop Ronald A. Hicks confirmed on Saturday that the deal remains tentative until every claimant approves the terms, the New York Post reported. The agreement aims to resolve claims stemming from historical sexual misconduct within church institutions across the region. [1]
The Archdiocese of New York is an archdiocese of the Latin Church that covers the New York City boroughs of Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island, along with seven counties north of the city including Westchester and Dutchess. It operates as the metropolitan see for its regional ecclesiastical province. [3]
