Voters in the oil rich province of Alberta will vote on Monday in a historic referendum on whether to separate from Canada. Al Jazeera reported that this is the first time the issue of independence is being put directly to voters in the province. [1]
Longtime independence campaigners helped bring the vote to the ballot after years of pushing the former fringe idea. Cory Morgan, the founder of the advocacy group Pathway to Independence, told Al Jazeera that he will respect the decision of the voters but will continue his movement even if the vote fails. [1]
Alberta separatism is a series of movements that advocate for the separation of Alberta from Canada, with some groups supporting a union with Western Canada or joining the United States. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned at a Calgary unity rally that external forces were trying to divide the country ahead of the vote. [2][4]
The province relies heavily on its energy sector, particularly the Athabasca oil sands. The oil sands produced 3.4 million barrels of raw bitumen per day in 2023 and generated 16.9 billion Canadian dollars in royalties for the 2022 to 2023 fiscal year. [3]
