A major fire has broken out at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta following what Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called a serious incident on Saturday. DW, AP News, Newsday, and StreetInsider all reported that Carney confirmed the fire in a post on X. The Times of India also reported that the Prime Minister declared a serious incident had occurred at the base. [1][8][10][11][12]

Carney did not state what caused the fire or whether anyone was injured, according to DW. He stated that the federal government was working with Alberta officials and local authorities to address the situation. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the event as significant and tragic, adding that many military personnel were affected, DW reported. [1]

The Canadian Armed Forces are the unified military forces of Canada, including sea, land, air, and special operations forces commands. The incident occurred in Alberta, a landlocked prairie province in western Canada. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Carney previously served as Governor of the Bank of Canada and Governor of the Bank of England. [13][15][17]

The blaze occurred as Alberta prepares for a referendum on Oct. 19 regarding its potential separation from Canada, according to the Edmonton Journal. CBS News reported that around 20 percent of Alberta residents want to formally separate from the country. Support for Alberta remaining in Canada has been steadily rising ahead of the referendum, according to a Leger poll cited by the Edmonton Journal. [2][5]
