Footage released by the city council shows extensive destruction inside Limoges Town Hall in central France after a fire during riots on 17 October, Euronews reported. Images filmed on 19 October show damaged corridors, stairwells, and a collapsed roof, with firefighters present at the location. Euronews noted that an investigation into the suspected arson attack is ongoing. [1]

The fire occurred amid growing protests across France that have increased in size for weeks, BBC News reported. Demonstrations that began over the state of high schools expanded into widespread anger over rising living costs and fiscal challenges. According to BBC News, younger residents viewed the destruction as collateral damage in a broader movement, while others described the act as an unacceptable tragedy. [2][3]

Completed in 1883 by architect Alfred Leclerc, the municipal building stands on the Place Jacques Chirac in Haute-Vienne and was designated a monument historique in 1975. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the fire destroyed about two-thirds of the exterior, caused the clock tower and spire to collapse, and left only the west wing spared. Authorities previously arrested a 40-year-old suspect linked to a far-left movement in connection with the blaze. [7][10][11]
