According to the Daily Mail, the victims were young women between the ages of 18 and 25, mostly from Venezuela. Upon their arrival in Spain, the crime group confiscated their money and personal belongings and forced them to pay off an alleged debt of 5,000 euros, or about 4,236 British pounds. [1]
The women were coerced into prostitution and trafficking activities by the criminal gang after discovering the promised jobs did not exist, the Daily Mail reported. [1]
The rescue operation was carried out by the Civil Guard, which is one of Spain's two national law enforcement agencies. As a national gendarmerie with a military nature, the Civil Guard handles civil policing duties under the authority of both the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Defence. [1][2]
