Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called a general election for 29 November, putting the country's pension system at the centre of political debate, Euronews reported. The announcement came as Spain reached a record high monthly pension bill of almost 14.5 billion euros. [1]
Euronews reported that Spain's pension system is not bankrupt, but it relies heavily on funding from the central government. The Social Security system ended 2025 with a deficit equal to 0.4 percent of gross domestic product following 47.8 billion euros in state transfers. [1]
According to research institute Fedea, as cited by Euronews, the underlying pension deficit reaches 4.15 percent of gross domestic product when state transfers are excluded. [1]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, public pension funding challenges remain a global concern, including in California, where the public system faces a shortfall of at least 153 billion dollars. [2]
