The remains of medieval ruler Czar Samuel arrived in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia on Saturday, October 3, 2026, more than 1,000 years after his death. Al Jazeera and Ahram Online both reported that the coffin containing the remains was flown into Sofia on board a military aircraft escorted by air force fighter jets. Al Jazeera reported that thousands of people poured into a public square to honour the arrival of the ruler, who remains a prominent symbol of Bulgarian national identity. [1][5]

According to Al Jazeera, Samuel was a warrior emperor who battled the Byzantine Empire to expand his kingdom prior to suffering defeat and dying shortly afterward in 1014. The news outlet reported that his supposed remains were originally discovered in a Greek border region in the 1960s. Al Jazeera also reported that the repatriation of the emperor's remains created diplomatic tensions between Bulgaria and Greece. [1]

The title czar, which is also spelled tsar, tzar, or csar, is derived from the Latin word caesar. It was intended to represent an emperor in the European medieval sense of the term, holding rank equivalent to a Roman emperor, although Western Europeans usually regarded the title as equivalent to a king.
