Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated he would welcome an honest discussion about returning to free movement between the United Kingdom and the European Union, BBC News reported. Speaking to the Sunday Times, he said he wants to pursue a new relationship with Brussels, which could include full European Union membership or joining the single market. [1]

The prime minister called for a very factual and evidence-based debate regarding the prospect of returning to free movement, according to BBC News. Opposition politicians responded quickly to the comments. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp stated there could be no return to free movement following the 2016 referendum, while Reform UK leader Nigel Farage also criticized the statements. [1]

The British press had previously highlighted upcoming coverage of political comments surrounding European Union free movement, as FTMQ News reported earlier. [3]
