New Hampshire officials have asked the United States Supreme Court to reinstate a state law that prevents student identification cards from being used as valid voter identification. The Washington Examiner reported that the state filed an emergency petition seeking to overturn a federal district court decision that blocked the law weeks before the upcoming midterm elections. [1]
State officials described the lower court ruling as a late rewrite of election procedures in New Hampshire. The state legislature had enacted the ban on student identification cards for voting in April. [1]
The legal action comes during a series of high profile filings before the United States Supreme Court. Separately, Al Jazeera and The Washington Post reported that the court agreed to hear a challenge regarding middle school admissions criteria in Maryland, while the South China Morning Post reported that activist Mahmoud Khalil asked the court to block a deportation order. [2][3][6][7]
The high court has also recently addressed other matters. According to the Washington Examiner, the Supreme Court was unable to consider a copyright case after four justices recused themselves, leaving the lower court ruling in place due to a lack of a quorum. [4]
