MI5 Warns U.K. Academics Contributed to Chinese Intelligence Research

The U.K. domestic intelligence and security agency, MI5, has issued a formal espionage alert regarding Chinese research funding. According to The Hacker News, MI5 issued the alert on September 30, 2026. The agency stated that more than 100 U.K.-linked academics contributed to research funded by China. MI5 warned that these academic efforts helped China boost its intelligence gathering capabilities on behalf of its state security service. [1]

The Hacker News reported that the academic research was conducted through the China General Technology Research Institute. The organization is also known as the China Academy of General Technology. MI5 assesses that the institute operates as a front for the Chinese Ministry of State Security. The agency stated that the primary purpose of the institute is to fund research that directly improves technical capability for Chinese espionage. [1]
