Australia's Labor and Coalition parties are set to reject a bill that would have prohibited the shackling of incarcerated women during childbirth, The Guardian reported. Independent senator Lidia Thorpe introduced the legislation into the Senate to prevent shackling and to stop children from being strip-searched. The Australian government stated that the issue was the responsibility of state and territory governments. [1][2]

Liberal senator Paul Scarr broke party ranks to criticize both major political parties over the decision, according to The Guardian. Senator Scarr stated that he will write to the Queensland attorney general regarding the matter. [1]

The proposed legislation aimed to address practices in corrections facilities where women can still be shackled while giving birth in 2026. The bill also included provisions to prevent adults from removing children's clothing for physical examinations. [1]
