Kerry County Councillors will write to the Department of Enterprise and Trade to request new laws protecting consumers from subscription traps. Radio Kerry reported that the local authority made the decision following a motion raised at a recent full council meeting. [1]
Fianna Fail councillor Fionnan Fitzgerald brought the motion to the council, stating that significant amounts of money are being lost by consumers due to difficult cancellation processes. He explained that while entering online contracts for streaming, phone, and television services is simple, ending them is almost impossible. [1]
Fitzgerald added that members of the public face major difficulties when attempting to cancel their recurring payments. He stated his belief that some online subscription systems are deliberately designed so that people cannot leave. [1]
The councillor argued that if consumers can join a subscription service with a single click, they should be offered an equally simple process to exit the contract. [1]
