Kenya confirmed its second case of Ebola on Wednesday after a relative of the country's first victim tested positive for the virus. Euronews and France 24 reported that the second patient is a 39-year-old male relative of the deceased. According to Euronews, the health ministry stated there is no evidence of large-scale transmission within the country. [1][3]

The new case follows the death of a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. France 24 reported that the first patient died in a Nairobi hospital on October 5 after travelling from Congo through Uganda, as FTMQ News reported earlier. The initial death marked the first time Ebola was detected in Kenya. [1][3][5][10][15][16]

The latest infection comes amid a broader regional epidemic centred in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Euronews reported that the epicentre remains in Congo's Ituri Province, while cases have also been detected in Uganda. STAT reported that authorities in Congo have confirmed more than 4,000 deaths and 9,000 cases in one of the fastest-growing Ebola outbreaks on record. [1][2]

Initial cases in the 2026 Ebola epidemic were reported in May in Ituri Province, making it the 17th Ebola outbreak in Congo. The virus causes an illness with an incubation period of two to 21 days, beginning with fever, severe headaches, and fatigue before progressing to gastrointestinal symptoms. [12][14]

Al Jazeera reported that the recent infections have tested Kenya's health preparedness and highlighted gaps in outbreak readiness across remote communities outside Nairobi. [6]
