Izmir Mayor Cemil Tugay joined President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling Justice and Development Party on Wednesday, Euronews reported. Tugay received his party badge from Erdogan at the party headquarters in Ankara during the opening of the legislative year. [1]

Tugay was elected mayor of Turkey's third-largest city as a candidate for the centre-left Republican People's Party in 2024, winning by a margin of 314,000 votes, according to Euronews. His decision to switch parties ends 27 years of centre-left rule in Izmir. [1]

Erdogan's ruling party, officially abbreviated as the AK Party, has been the ruling party of Turkey since 2002. It currently holds 277 seats in the Grand National Assembly, making it the largest party in the legislature. [2]

The move hands the ruling party a major symbolic victory in a city it had failed to win in three consecutive municipal elections, Euronews reported. [1]
