The Irish Examiner reported that Ireland is planning to early repay 8 billion euros in loans received during its 2010 international bailout. Tánaiste Simon Harris stated he will seek approval to grant the national debt agency options to pay off the debt ahead of schedule in order to lower interest costs for taxpayers. [1]

According to the Irish Examiner, the proposed payments target loans granted under the European Financial Stabilisation Mechanism. Ireland currently holds 15.3 billion euros in outstanding debt under this mechanism, which represents nearly half of the total money owed to European institutions. The country recorded 28 billion euros in cash and liquid asset reserves at the end of September. [1]

The 2010 bailout followed the post-2008 Irish banking crisis, when several financial institutions faced collapse due to insolvency. The Irish government implemented a 64 billion euro bank bailout, which ultimately forced the state to seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund amidst a deepening economic recession. [2]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, Ireland has recently drawn on its improved financial position to introduce public spending measures, including budget plans aimed at lowering annual fulltime childcare costs by at least 1,000 euros per child. [4]
