Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said two crude oil tankers caught fire after hitting naval mines it laid in the Strait of Hormuz, Euronews reported. The Guard Corps stated that the vessels attempted to navigate through a route that Iran unilaterally designated as unauthorized. As FTMQ News reported earlier, each of the two crude oil tankers was carrying two million barrels of oil when the fires occurred. [1][5]
Tehran threatened further attacks on shipping and vowed to reveal new weapons in its arsenal, according to Euronews. A spokesperson for the Guard Corps also threatened to target undersea internet cables in the Gulf, while the Iranian foreign ministry warned Washington that Tehran would retaliate against any military strikes. [1]
An outlet associated with the Guard Corps reported that Pakistan's top general is scheduled to visit Tehran on Tuesday, according to Iran International. Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has been largely blocked by Iran since 28 February 2026, following the launch of an air war against Iran by the United States and Israel. The Guard Corps retaliated by issuing transit warnings, attacking merchant ships, and laying sea mines. Prior to the conflict, approximately 25 percent of the world's seaborne oil trade and 20 percent of liquefied natural gas passed through the waterway. [1][2][3]
A United States Central Command spokesman previously stated to Fox News that the strait remains open to commercial shipping, as FTMQ News reported earlier. However, reports noted that ship strikes in the Strait of Hormuz reached a record high this month. [5]
