An investigation by Al Jazeera has challenged official Israeli accounts regarding a violent attack by settlers on Palestinian olive harvesters and an American photojournalist on Friday in Khirbet Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. Al Jazeera reported that its Data Journalism Unit used open source verification alongside geographic and visual evidence to analyze the event. [1]
Al Jazeera reported that official Israeli narratives about the incident conflict. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office questioned if Israeli settlers were responsible, while the Israeli army suggested that military forces were managing a confrontation between Palestinians and settlers. [1]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, American freelance photojournalist Heidi Levine was hospitalized after being beaten by settlers during the attack. Levine has covered the Israeli Palestinian conflict for much of her career and has worked for outlets including The Washington Post, the Associated Press, and Sipa Press. Israeli police later arrested 10 suspects following settler attacks on Levine and European diplomats. [4][6][7]
Following the attack, the United States ambassador to Israel called for the arrest and prosecution of the settlers who targeted Levine, CBS News reported. NewsCord reported that United States official Marco Rubio also urged Israel to execute a crackdown on settler violence. [2][3]
