Leaders of India's online cockroach movement pledged on Sunday to continue their campaign against the country's election commissioner. France 24 reported that the pledge came hours after the leaders were released from detention by authorities who were trying to prevent a major demonstration. [1]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, India's top court ordered the release of the detained youth protest leaders after police in New Delhi conducted a massive security crackdown. Authorities detained more than 2,000 people to block the planned mass protest and suspended mobile internet services in central New Delhi. The youth-led movement is demanding the resignation of India's election chief over revisions to voter lists. [4]
The Cockroach Janta Party was founded on 16 May 2026 by political communications strategist Abhijeet Dipke. The movement formed after Chief Justice of India Surya Kant referred to certain activists and unemployed youth as cockroaches on 15 May 2026. Surya Kant later clarified that he was referring to individuals with fraudulent degrees. The name serves as a play on words regarding the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. [2]
The election system has faced ongoing political criticism. As FTMQ News reported earlier, opposition lawmakers have staged demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged voter list deletions, including protests in Bengaluru demanding his resignation. Earlier reports indicated that 130 million voters were removed from the electoral rolls, while 42 former judges signed a statement defending the Election Commission of India. [5]
