The death toll in Florida from Hurricane Isaias has risen to six, state Governor Ron DeSantis announced during a Tuesday press conference. The Guardian and the New York Post both reported that the governor confirmed the updated fatalities during the briefing. The storm made landfall late on Friday, bringing strong winds, rain, flash floods, and severe weather threats across the region, according to The Guardian. [1][2]

The latest reported fatalities included two post-storm incidents detailed by the New York Post. A woman was killed when a tree fell onto her home in Escambia County, and a man died from carbon monoxide poisoning after improperly operating a generator. Governor DeSantis noted that these recent deaths occurred after the storm had passed and were attenuated from the main event. [1]

Scientific American reported that Hurricane Isaias made landfall as a Category 2 storm, generating 105-mile-per-hour winds, tornadoes, flash flooding, and heavy rainfall. The severe conditions destroyed buildings, knocked down power lines, and left hundreds of thousands of residents across the U.S. south-east without electricity, according to The Guardian and Scientific American. [2][4]

The tropical cyclone originated from a low-pressure area in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico on October 6 before moving northeastward toward the coast. Isaias reached hurricane status on October 8, tying the record for the latest date a first hurricane was recorded in the Atlantic basin since 1905. [11]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, the hurricane initially made landfall near Destin, Florida, and caused emergency declarations across Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi. Recovery and cleanup efforts are continuing across the impacted areas as officials assess the total damage. [1][15][16]
