Researchers are warning that a major rock collapse could soon occur on the Hochvogel mountain, which stands on the border between Germany and Austria. Euronews reported that up to 400,000 cubic metres of rock are at risk of breaking away from the summit. The warning follows a smaller rockfall in June, when approximately 2,000 cubic metres of rock detached from the mountain. [1]
The 2,592-metre-high summit is located in the Allgäu Alps between Germany and the Austrian region of Tyrol. According to Euronews, a crack on the mountain has existed since the 19th century and is steadily widening. Historical records show the fissure was once shoulder-width, but it now measures several metres across. [1][3]
Scientists have been studying and monitoring the geological hotspot for twelve years. Euronews reported that field trips were initially used to track the movement, followed by continuous monitoring equipment installed since 2018. [1]
The Hochvogel is the thirteenth highest peak in the Allgäu range and stands prominently in the eastern section of the mountain group. Its nearest neighboring summits are 200 to 300 metres lower, and experienced climbers can reach the summit using two marked routes. [3]
