Indonesia is currently facing its worst forest fires in more than a decade. The authorities in Jakarta announced that the country will accept foreign assistance to tackle the growing crisis. Wildfires have extended beyond national borders, generating toxic haze that has affected neighboring countries in Southeast Asia. [1][3]
The fires have caused widespread disruption across the region. As FTMQ News reported earlier, toxic haze from Indonesian forest fires caused school closures in Malaysia, turned skies orange in Palangkaraya, raised air pollution in Singapore to annual highs, and closed schools in East Timor. [8][9]
Indonesia has the largest economy in Southeast Asia, with a nominal gross domestic product of 1.45 trillion dollars in 2025. The country operates a decentralized system of governance across its various ethnic groups and island territories. [7]
