Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder attended Russian President Vladimir Putin's birthday celebration in Moscow on Wednesday, DW and Yahoo reported. Kremlin officials stated on Thursday that Putin invited his old friend to his home after learning via Russian media reports that Schröder was visiting the Russian capital for business. [1][2]

The Russian government released photographs showing the 82-year-old former German leader smiling and clasping hands with Putin, DW reported. Putin was celebrating his 74th birthday in Moscow during the visit. [1]

The meeting occurred while political tensions remain high between Germany and Russia over the continuing invasion of Ukraine, DW noted. As FTMQ News reported earlier, overnight Russian missile and drone attacks killed at least 12 people across Ukraine on Putin's birthday. [1][5]
