Former Chicago Bears head coach Mike Ditka dies at 86

Former Chicago Bears player and head coach Mike Ditka has died at the age of 86, according to announcements made by his family on Friday. Outlets including UPI, The Guardian, and Fox News reported the news after Jarrett Payton, the son of former Bears running back Walter Payton, shared the family statement. The family expressed profound sadness at his passing but did not disclose the cause of death. UPI noted that Ditka had previously suffered multiple heart attacks and a stroke. Ditka famously led the 1985 Chicago Bears to a Super Bowl championship, which remains the only Super Bowl title in the history of the franchise, as reported by UPI, the New York Post, and the Daily Mail. The Guardian noted that he is one of only two people in National Football League history to win league championships as a player, an assistant coach, and a head coach. [1][3][4][7]

During his playing career, Ditka revolutionized the tight end position, as noted by the Daily Mail. He was named the UPI NFL Rookie of the Year in 1961 and became the first tight end in league history to gain 1,000 receiving yards in his debut season. Ditka earned five Pro Bowl selections while playing for the Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles, and Dallas Cowboys before his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988. [1][7][13]

Ditka was born Michael Keller Ditka Jr. on October 18, 1939, in Carnegie, Pennsylvania, to a steel mill welder. His family later relocated to Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, where he was raised in a modest household before pursuing his career in professional football. [15]
