The European Union is coming to terms with the limits of its financial support for Ukraine as Russia escalates its military actions, Euronews reported on Saturday. Officials told the outlet that Russia's attacks are straining Ukrainian finances, depleting its air defence systems, and increasing its reliance on external donors. [1]
European diplomats cited by Euronews conceded that leaders will soon need to address the contentious issue of future funding. An anonymous diplomat stated that the war will last longer than expected and that Ukraine's needs will continue to grow without a clear mechanism to address them. [1]
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces have carried out drone strikes targeting Russia's technology infrastructure, according to Al Jazeera and Reuters. Ukrainian drone attacks disabled an artificial intelligence data centre operated by Russian technology company Yandex, following an attack on another Yandex data hub the previous day. [2][7]
Al Jazeera reported that these strikes on technology sites follow Russian attacks against data hubs inside Ukraine. On the ground, Ukraine has made battlefield gains in Donetsk, forcing Russian troops to retreat from several settlements, according to reports from Al Jazeera and NPR. [2][3][5]
In short
- The European Union is reassessing its multibillion-euro support programmes for Ukraine.
- Ukrainian drone strikes disabled an AI data centre operated by Russian digital giant Yandex.
- Ukrainian forces have pushed back Russian troops from settlements in the Donetsk region.
