Eurozone treasuries are preparing record bond sales for 2027 as the International Monetary Fund warns that borrowing costs have reached a two-decade high, Euronews reported. The shift has altered traditional borrowing patterns across the currency bloc, where Northern European nations historically paid significantly lower rates than Southern European debtors. [1]

According to Euronews, Belgium now borrows for ten years at a rate of 4.29 percent. Greece, which was bailed out three times during the European debt crisis, pays a similar rate of 4.35 percent, while Portugal also sees reduced borrowing differentials compared to northern member states. [1]

The Belgian government has been seeking to save at least 10 billion euros to reduce its national deficit, as FTMQ News reported earlier. The country operates a complex federal political system that balances regional powers and linguistic communities, according to background details, and hosts the headquarters of both NATO and the European Union in Brussels. [11][12]

The international borrowing environment comes as governments across Europe face rising fiscal pressures. Euronews reported that the current alignment of sovereign yield rates represents a major departure from the traditional economic map established during the height of the euro crisis in 2012. [1]
