Ethiopian federal forces and allied militia have entered the town of Adwa in northern Tigray, according to reports from France 24, Al Jazeera, and The Hindu. Al Jazeera stated that the troops entered the strategic town without a fight on Sunday, following the withdrawal of Tigray People's Liberation Front fighters a day earlier. [1][2][5]
Adwa is located approximately 40 kilometres from the border with Eritrea, according to Al Jazeera. The outlet reported that shops in the town were closed following the arrival of federal forces, while Tigray People's Liberation Front Vice President Amanuel Assefa declined to comment on the developments. [1][2][5]
The advance follows the earlier capture of Adigrat by government forces, Al Jazeera reported. Meanwhile, Ethiopian Airlines resumed commercial flights to Mekelle, the regional capital of Tigray, on Sunday. [2]
The military movements follow earlier fighting in the region. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Ethiopian federal forces entered Mekelle and recaptured its main airport on October 3, following a rebel offensive launched across Tigray, Afar, and Amhara late last month. [8]
France 24 reported that residents in northern Tigray fear further violence and instability as the wider regional conflict intensifies. [1]
