At least eight people were hospitalized early on Friday after a New York-bound passenger plane encountered severe turbulence during a flight from Colombia, according to the New York Post. The Avianca aircraft was forced to divert and make an emergency landing at Miami International Airport. [1]

The flight departed Medellin, Colombia, at 10:40 p.m. local time on Thursday, heading for John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The New York Post cited FlightAware data showing that the aircraft diverted just three hours into its trip. [1]

Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue officials told CBS that multiple patients sustained injuries before the plane touched down around 3:30 a.m. Passengers arriving at the gate saw more than five or six ambulances waiting on the tarmac, the New York Post reported. [1]
