Learner drivers in September waited an average of 19.7 weeks, or about five months, for a practical driving test, according to BBC News. Official figures show that average waiting times dropped below 20 weeks for the first time since November 2024. [1][2]

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency has been attempting to clear a backlog and reduce waiting times since the Covid pandemic began in 2020. BBC News reported that the agency originally hoped to cut the average wait time to seven weeks by the end of last year. [1]

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has pushed for progress on the issue. However, one driving instructor told BBC News that the current improvement is not anything to boast about. [1]
