United States President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Ukraine's access to the Starshield satellite system had been restored, according to France 24 and DW.com. Kyiv had previously reported limitations in its access to the network, which affected its ability to intercept Russian strikes. Officials in the Trump administration and their allies offered mixed messages regarding what led to the sudden restrictions. [1][9]

The restrictions on Starshield created internal blame between officials and allies, France 24 reported. A European official stated that the system restrictions were still not entirely over despite the statements from the United States president. Meanwhile, a United States Democratic senator opened an investigation into Ukraine's loss of service and requested answers regarding oversight by the Pentagon, according to Reuters and Firstpost. [1][5][10]

Ukraine has begun looking to European companies for satellite communications amid the fight over access, Politico reported. Starshield is a military-grade adaptation of SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet network. As FTMQ News reported earlier, SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk previously stated that restrictions on Starshield systems are determined by the United States military and President Donald Trump rather than SpaceX. [1][3][12]

Starshield is a division of SpaceX's Starlink subsidiary that creates low-Earth-orbit satellites designed to provide military capabilities to the United States and allied governments. The network is adapted from Starlink to offer target tracking, optical and radio reconnaissance, and early missile warnings. Its primary customers include the Space Development Agency, the National Reconnaissance Office, and the United States Space Force. [11]
