Cameroonian journalist Ambe Macmillan is recovering in hospital after gunmen shot him in the legs in the north-western city of Bamenda. France 24 reported that a young woman was also killed when the attackers opened fire on mourners attending a wake. [1]

The attack has renewed concerns regarding the dangers facing journalists in the English-speaking regions of Cameroon, according to France 24. [1]

Bamenda is a major urban hub in the Anglophone territories of Cameroon and hosts institutions such as the University of Bamenda. Since late 2016, the city has been central to the Anglophone crisis, which began after protests by lawyers and teachers against the central government escalated into an armed insurgency by separatist groups seeking independence for the Ambazonia region.
