Artificial intelligence company Anthropic updated its usage policy on Thursday to ban users from engaging in sustained and needless abusive behavior towards its technology. BBC News reported that the maker of the Claude AI model will now permit its tools to end interactions when people are cruel to the systems. [1]

According to BBC News, Anthropic stated that it had previously ended interactions during rare cases of cruelty. The updated rules now add abuse towards the technology to a list of forbidden conduct that includes bullying people, promoting self-harm, and creating non-consensual intimate imagery. [1]

Anthropic operates under a governance model that includes an independent Long-Term Benefit Trust to protect its public benefit purpose against short-term pressures. The company introduced Constitutional AI in 2022 to train models using explicit natural-language principles instead of relying only on human preference data. [3]

BBC News reported that the new policy will apply only in extreme cases of repeated abuse and will not apply to common versions of user frustration. The decision has restarted a public debate regarding how people should communicate with artificial intelligence tools. [1]
