Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has warned that the country faces a hazardous summer featuring floods, cyclones, and extreme heat due to a super El Niño brewing in the Pacific Ocean, the Guardian and The News International reported. Speaking at a pre-COP climate adaptation event, Albanese told delegates in Tuvalu and Fiji that climate breakdown represents an immediate threat, according to the Guardian. [2][3]

NewsCord reported that Albanese led a delegation of 14 leaders to Tuvalu for the climate tour. During his address to delegates across Tuvalu and Fiji, he stated that the brewing super El Niño demonstrates that climate change is occurring right now, the Guardian reported. [2][6]

At home, Albanese is also facing domestic pressure regarding infrastructure commitments. The Daily Mail reported that new data indicates Australia's housing target is at risk of becoming a broken promise. Demand from a growing data centre boom is diverting labour and material resources away from residential construction in an already strained construction sector, according to the Daily Mail. [1]

Albanese has served as the 31st prime minister of Australia since 2022 and has led the Labor Party since 2019. He was raised in public housing in Sydney's inner west by a single mother and studied economics and social sciences at the University of Sydney before entering federal politics in 1996. [7][9]
