Researchers at the University of Kansas have reviewed ancient DNA and 23,000 year old footprints from White Sands to trace early human migration into North America, Fox News reported. The study narrowed down the timeline of when humans first arrived on the continent, addressing a question that has long puzzled scientists. [1]
According to Fox News, the findings suggest that genetic evidence most strongly supports humans reaching the Americas between 14,000 and 20,000 years ago. The study indicates that human arrival occurred before 15,000 years ago. The research examined previously published genetic and archaeological evidence to evaluate early human movements. [1]
Ancient DNA consists of genetic material isolated from ancient sources, such as skeletal material, preserved plants, and sediments, which is more degraded than present day material. The study of ancient DNA began in 1984 with the cloning of mitochondrial DNA from a quagga specimen, and later technological advances allowed scientists to sequence entire ancient genomes. [2][4]
The study was published online ahead of its formal appearance in the December 2026 print issue of the journal Current Opinion in Genetics and Development, Fox News reported. [1]
